Press Release: A call for climate action - #NaijaClimateNow!

Lagos, Nigeria (4 June 2021) - Solution17 for Climate Action and the United Nations Information Centre for Nigeria (UNIC) will begin a climate change campaign tagged #NaijaClimateNow on 5 June 2021 to commemorate World Environment Day. It is a call to doers, creators, innovators, scientists, students, youths, and entrepreneurs to design and implement sustainable solutions to support climate change adaptation in Nigeria. Registration will close by 31 July 2021.

The project is also collaborating with Corona Secondary School, Agbara, Ogun State to co-create climate change solutions and showcase impactful community projects, entrepreneurship and environmental awareness as part of the campaign.

“Nigeria is already experiencing the effects of climate change. There are variable and extreme weather events: increased temperatures, variable precipitation, floods, droughts, desertification, land degradation and loss of biodiversity,” says Mr. Ronald Kayanja, Director for the UN Information Center for Nigeria.  “These changing weather patterns are already disrupting livelihoods, leading to even deeper impoverishment and conflicts over the dwindling resources”. However, there are innovative solutions which should be employed to enable Nigerians to adapt to these changes to the climate. Some of these innovations are in climate smart agriculture, product value chains, efficient use of water resources, food preservation and many others.

The campaign’s objective is to promote such solutions that will enable more efficient and faster climate adaptation in Nigeria through innovative and technology-based approaches. Through the campaign participants will learn more about climate change and how it is affecting Nigeria today, and propose solutions to the challenges. It is expected that participants will become green entrepreneurs through implementing climate action enterprises for social impact and profit.

According to the Project Director of Solution17 for Climate Action, Foluke Michael, the project will welcome applications from anyone under 35 years old in Nigeria who has ideas or solutions. Submission can either be by individuals or teams. All eligible entrants must apply online. The process includes Screening and Interview sessions, followed by a presentation of finalists and a virtual Innovation Hub to develop and co-create climate change solutions.

Later in the year, the project will showcase Nigerian-made solutions and technologies to address climate change at a special summit and art exhibition. The campaign is a build-up to the crucial COP26 - UN Climate Change Conference, scheduled to hold in Glasgow on 1- 12 November 2021. #NaijaClimateNow will launch officially on 17 June 2021, the World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought.
