Trees From Art: Mercedes-Benz partners Solution17 and Lagos State Government to protect the environment.

On April 7, 2022, the Creative Youth Community Development Initiative (CYCDI) - Solution17 for Climate Action launched 'Trees From Art' (TfA) in partnership with the Lagos State Government, the Delegation of German Industry and Commerce in Nigeria (AHK Nigeria) and Mercedes-Benz to launch Trees From Art to champion climate awareness, climate education, and tree planting in Lagos State.

Trees From Art was created from 17 Art for Climate Change Virtual Exhibition, launched by Naija Climate Now on November 1, 2021, the first day of COP26 at the Italian Consulate Lagos. The partnership with Mercedes-Benz is a step toward planting 100,000 Economic Trees in Lagos State by 2023 and 10 million trees in Nigeria by September 25, 2030.

The partnership was in response to the call made by the Lagos State Governor, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu, at the launch of the initiative earlier this year with stakeholders, environmentalists and young persons to support the state and make the environment green, habitable and safe.

At the Tree Planting event held at Vetland Junior Grammar School and Vetland Senior Grammar School, Agege, the Deputy Managing Director of Weststar Associates Limited (Authorised general distributor of Mercedes-Benz in Nigeria), Mrs. Mary Ojulari spoke on the necessity for everyone to work together in protecting the environment. She pointed out many illustrations of the impact of climate change in the world today and in Nigeria specifically. She gave an example of the flooding in Lagos state, which has become worrying as people's lives are grossly affected by environmental effects and climate change due to rising sea levels. She stated that this example drives the importance of the need to continue to protect our environment. She mentioned that Mercedes-Benz is greatly committed to climate protection and improving air quality on a broader scale, having joined the Paris Agreement on climate protection.

"Weststar is the authorised General Distributor for Mercedes-Benz in Nigeria. The company coordinates the manufacturer's business activities, including; Sales, Dealer Support, Fleet Management Support, After Sales Services, Warranties, Marketing, Training, and Public Affairs, as an extension of the renowned brand we represent. Weststar is fully committed to supporting initiatives protecting our environment and increasing awareness of climate change" Mary added.

She further stated that Mercedes-Benz's goal is to have "an emission-free fleet of vehicles". Mercedes-Benz is committed to climate protection and air pollution control with this vision. Our ambition is to make our fleet of new cars Co2-neutral by 2039 and to have no relevant impact on inner-city air quality. Mercedes-Benz takes a holistic approach to climate protection. Our goals cover all stages of the automotive value chain - from technical development to the extraction of raw materials to production, service life, and recycling. At Mercedes-Benz, the Paris Agreement on climate protection is more than a commitment - it is a conviction.

At the Tree Planting and Data Capturing exercise, 100 economic trees were planted at Vetland Junior and Senior Grammar School, Agege, with the support of Mercedes-Benz.

The school management has also inaugurated the Creative Club50 to facilitate practical training and capacity building. One Hundred Student Tree Managers will monitor and care for the trees in addition to the designed module on Innovation, Entrepreneurship, Environmental Education, ArtNovation, and SDGs.
At the event, the CEO and Project Project, Foluke Michael, appreciated AHK, Mercedes-Benz, and the school management for their unparalleled and dedicated support for TfA. She announced that her organisation would announce a partnership with their Climate Technology company based in Hong Kong by June 2022.

The technology will track tree location, tree facts, and carbon sequestration. It will also help businesses integrate tree planting into their processes: connect customers to its sustainability journey, set up loyalty programs, trees for employee engagement, trees for rewards, and transparency carbon offsetting programme." she added.

In her words, everyone plays a role in protecting the environment, and sensitizing the young population on the impact of climate change is highly important. We believe strongly in the need for climate education across all levels and would continue to onboard more companies to support this great initiative.
